Some top level points:
- Look to diversify the project types you manage, i.e. hosting, web development, business intelligence, back office, mergers etc. The more exposure you have to the different projects the more attractive this is to employers
- Try to manage various sizes of projects. Small, medium, large and extremely large. I am aware this is sometimes difficult depending which organisation you work for. Multitasking between projects is just as hard as managing one large project. So concurrency is also very valuable.
- Try to get exposure to larger budget projects. Managing large budgets is attractive.
- Study hard to improve your techniques. Get pmp certified!
- Work hard to hit the triple constraint objectives in all projects. Get the projects under budget, delivered in time and meeting the business requirements.
- Try to get many years of experience under your belt, experience is one of the most valuable assets
- Try to volunteer outside of work in volunteering projects

I wrote an article a few months ago, on the advice I'd give to my younger self. I hope it helps you.
