AI - A certain laziness of mind?

Applauding artificial intelligence, of course. To help find complex solutions, certainly.
But doesn't it generate a certain laziness of mind, where all tools and solutions become at your fingertips. I'm not saying it's not very useful, but doesn't it lead to a degeneration of self-constructive proactivity? Ever since Epictetus, we've known that the brain builds itself through innovation and perpetual adaptation, and develops its intelligence by “adapting to new situations”. A muscle that relies on exoskeletons for movement will eventually disappear....
I don't have solutions...and I humbly meditate with you.

Hello! I completely agree with your insightful thoughts on AI. It's crucial to use it as a tool to enhance our abilities, rather than as a substitute. Finding the right balance is indeed key to maintaining our critical and creative thinking. Thank you.

Hi Ahmed, you are right. Using Ai tools beyond a level can lead to laziness and even, results that are quite unfavourable. I have used AI to explore how it can help in data analysis and what I found out is that we still need to know what we want AI to do in order to get the desired results. As much as AI helps in getting quite a lot of things done much easily, I still restrict myself to use AI only for crucial tasks. It can be quite addicting if we don't control the usage of AI

Hello Saeed, Certainly. When it comes to creativity and personal development through action and practice outside of any AI support, tricky questions arise; among them, doubt about one's ability to move forward ...alone. These are times of rising machine power and declining human capacity.

I understand your concern, and I believe AI doesn’t inherently create laziness. Instead, it can enhance our efficiency in solving complex problems. Using AI tools, such as crafting effective prompts, requires us to think critically and creatively about how we communicate with the system. It challenges us to adapt and refine our approaches, rather than offering simple solutions. In a way, AI frees up more time and cognitive space for us to focus on higher-level tasks and creative endeavors.

This is similar to the evolution of other technologies, like television or online platforms. These tools didn’t create laziness but made it more efficient to reach broader audiences and achieve objectives with less effort. Performers, like actors or singers, still need to practice and perfect their performance, but they now have more resources to invest in other areas, like marketing, thanks to these platforms. Similarly, AI can empower us to focus more on what truly matters, such as automating repetitive tasks or improve efficiencies or output.

Eventually, laziness is not about technology. It is more about the person. AI, much like any tool, amplifies our potential.

First of all, AI is a board term. AI is outside there from more than 40 years ago. We are surrounded of AI items or using AI most of the times without being aware on that. For example in refrigerators, air conditioners, cars, etc, etc. With that said, I totally disagree about "it generate a certain laziness of mind". In fact, to use AI and mainly the new model of generative AI you have to think a lot from data and prompt creation to get the needed outcomes. Unfortunately some people think that AI makes magic.

Ahmed, while I do get your concern, I think the tasks are just shifting. When was the last time you calculated numbers on a piece of paper? When was the last time you wrote a mail on a type writer and manually sent it?

Dear Mustafa
You have raised a very valid concern.
Yes , the possibility of a person becoming lazy is very much there. More so the laziness of application of mind to the response from AI tool ignoring the fact that AI can give inappropriate or even wrong response that can have adverse impact on the outcome or the solution of the problem. The mind of AI user can get blind to the fact that AI can go wrong and as it is a machine, it will only apologize without any true feeling behind that apology. AI tool user is ultimately responsible for the solution that he or she implements and not the tool.
So the big threat is AI users will become inert to what should be the true solution and would lose his or her capability to judge appropriately or intuitively and innovatively unless the user is vigilant and diligent of that kind of happening to self and keeps on evaluating consciously the AI output for its correctness and apt fitting.
But , there is no doubt that AI is handy tool.
Warm regards,
Mohan Kulkarni

It's the classical question with any disruptive technology. I do think it's more pertinent from a GenAI perspective rather than classical AI. Classical AI still has a lot of art behind it, but GenAI is more prone to making people "lazy" in their thinking in the short-term. In the long-term, I do hope that as people would learn to live with it and adopt it as an efficiency tool (like calculators, laptops, etc.), they would re-channel their energies into new and different creative endeavors. Unfortunately, I do think there will be collateral damage along the way though. For instance, I give a lot of emphasis to written communication. Lately, I find myself resorting to GenAI for conveying my thoughts in an email, something that I used to take pride in doing myself. Same logic applies to more sophisticated creative endeavors like writing articles, authoring books, screenplays, making videos, etc.
