Hi everyone,

In software industry, Small And Midsize Enterprises (SME) often need project managers who could manage everything. Two of the abilities is to resolve technical issues and deeply understand people.

When a SME becomes a large enterprise, as I observed, formal project managers are more common. These managers focus on process.

Is my observation right?

Thanks,
James

I think it's right (at least in my experience) to say that larger businesses have people with the job title of Project Manager. I wouldn't say that those people focus on process any more than someone who is running a project in a small company.

They may have to - as our company got larger we had to formalise processes to standardise things and save everyone a lot of time.

As we know, the number of communication channels among N stakeholders is N*(N-1)/2. As organisation grows, its growing complexity requires more processes to be managed efficiently. To manage processes and to manage people (namely customers and team members) require different set of skills and competencies. From my perspective, that is primarily the reason why different types of people get hired in start-ups than in middle or large-sized organizations.
