Risk management tools won't give you an edge. Effective application of risk management practices such as optimizing risk responses and getting risk owners to follow through on their actions will.

Tools differ between companies so any specific program won't matter much unless your prospective employer uses the same one. I emphasize not my tool use, but rather my strategic implementation of risk management approaches and sometimes implementing a new tool as part of the project deliverables. That shows you don't just use tools, you develop the business architecture supported by the tool.

While risk management tools like RiskWatch or Primavera can help, they alone won’t give you an edge. The key lies in applying effective practices, such as optimizing risk responses and ensuring risk owners follow through on actions. Demonstrating leadership, accountability, and stakeholder alignment in addressing risks is far more valuable to employers.

There are a number of different commercial tools available on the marketplace, and what works best for you will be a matter of your needs, budget, etc. That said, in my experience, you will need: a) a tool for gathering risks from team members and stakeholders (I like a custom Google Form approach); b) a repository for those risks (i.e., a Risk Register; I personally like to keep this simple with Google Sheets); c) a means of analyzing/discussing/responding to the risks (again, I prefer to do this within a custom Google Sheet, but I've also used Jira very successfully in the past); and d) a means of reporting on the risks.
