Ensuring agile governance requires balancing control and flexibility. This is achieved by prioritizing value delivery, empowering decentralized decision making, continuously adapting processes, maintaining transparent communication and balancing autonomy with oversight through key indicators. In addition, the use of digital tools facilitates automation and improves collaboration, allowing teams to focus on strategic outcomes.

Key Steps for Agile Governance

Define Clear Objectives & Metrics by establishing transparent goals for business outcomes (e.g., OKRs or KPIs). Align metrics with agile values like delivery speed, quality, and customer satisfaction.

Adopt Iterative Decision-Making by using regular checkpoints (e.g., sprint reviews) to make data-driven adjustments and ensure alignment with organizational goals.

Promote Cross-Functional Collaboration by enabling governance by involving business, IT, and operational stakeholders. Foster ownership and accountability at team levels.

Implement Lean Portfolio Management by prioritizing initiatives based on value streams and managing investments dynamically. Avoid rigid budgets and promote flexibility.

Ensure Transparency & Continuous Feedback by maintaining open communication through dashboards, retrospectives, and reports to provide visibility into progress and risks.

By following these principles within the appropriate frameworks, you can establish a governance structure that supports agility without stifling innovation.

The control & delivery objectives should not change regardless of a project's delivery approach. However, how those objectives are met would change. Rather than emphasize existence of specific delivery artifacts, the team should be empowered to come up with the best method of meeting objectives which could be an artifact, an online repository or even Post-its on a wall.

In many respects, agile approaches result in less governance concerns as there is much greater transparency to stakeholders and much shorter feedback loops.

In the same way than you stablish governance for other type of approaches/life cycle. Remember that agile is an approach, like Lean, and governance is on process used to run project with agile approach. Just to comment, I am writting this because I was in charge to create the governance process for projects running different approaches including it we need to be aligned with SOX controls.

Agile governance demands a delicate balance between flexibility and control. To drive success, establish clear objectives and metrics that align with agile values like speed, quality, and customer satisfaction. Implement iterative decision-making via regular checkpoints, fostering adaptability. Promote cross-functional collaboration, ensuring ownership and accountability at every level. Lean portfolio management prioritizes initiatives based on value streams while avoiding rigid budgets. Transparency through continuous feedback, dashboards, and retrospectives provides visibility into progress and risks.
