Can you share examples of negotiations you’ve been part of — whether they were successful or posed challenges — and the key takeaways that have shaped your approach to negotiation?

One notable negotiation I was part of involved securing additional resources for a critical project phase. Initially, there was resistance due to budget constraints, but by presenting a detailed cost-benefit analysis and demonstrating the potential impact on project timelines, we successfully obtained the necessary resources. The key takeaway was the importance of thorough preparation and clear communication in articulating the value and necessity of the requested resources. This experience has reinforced my approach to always back up requests with solid data and to anticipate potential objections.

Hello Eduard,
I view negotiation as a crucial skill in project management, bridging gaps between stakeholders and ensuring clear communication.

For example, I had to negotiate a project deadline with a client who made last-minute changes. By openly discussing priorities, we reached a compromise that worked for both parties.

Key takeaways include:
- Listen first to understand the other party's perspective.
- Stay calm to facilitate better discussions.
- Aim for win-win solutions to strengthen relationships.

I’m always learning from each negotiation experience!

Eduard, How about you?

A specific example from my end was when I was working with freelancers on a project. The budget was extremely tight and I had a maximum budget that I could spend per person however, the lesser I got it down to, the better it was. What I did was I focused on explaining how simple the work is and also emphasized that due to the same reason, as they do it more and more, they can get it done in lesser time. Through this way, I was able to get sufficient freelancers to get the project done within the scheduled time.
