I have gained a lot of knowledge and practical experience in project management by working on numerous projects, which has allowed me to build extensive expertise in this field. I obtained the PMP in 1998 after running projects for 10+ years.
It changed my life, internally and externally.
It gave me confidence and understanding of the vast pool of knowledge that makes up the Body of Knowledge, to which the PMBoK Guide led us. For example, I started to experiment and use earned value. I argued from a position of expert. I also started volunteering, having a sandbox for my development.
Externally, as Fabian says, the PMP title was respected among peers, management, and customers, also increasing expectations and challenges.
