In what ways can we integrate sustainability and ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) practices into our project management frameworks for 2025?

One way to get started is to form a sustainability team and try to define some sustainability goals. They can include things like % of materials from sustainable vendors and reduction of hazardous chemicals on the product side, and office initiatives like paper reduction and promoting hybrid meetings or providing public transportation to reduce the carbon footprint and traffic congestion

As they say, what gets measured gets done so creating SMART goals can help ensure sustainability is part of the plan rather than merely good will and wishful thinking.

Sustainability often costs more so one strategy at the corporate level may be partnering with suppliers, vendors, and regulators to explore future technologies as part of projects or even as projects in themselves. That not only helps with cost sharing but also aligning priorities across the value stream.

Golam, not long ago, I posted a similar question:

My comments there although they are specific to construction, yet they do apply to your question as well.

Golam,
In the realm of sustainability, I highly recommend watching Julia Binder, Professor of Sustainable Innovation and Business Transformation at IMD: https://www.imd.org/faculty/professors/julia-binder/

This is how I have integrated sustainability and ESG into project management frameworks. During initiation, I align project goals with ESG principles and sustainable development objectives to ensure strategic impact. In planning and execution, I prioritize green procurement, ethical labor practices, and resource efficiency while tracking progress using ESG-specific KPIs. Finally, I evaluate outcomes against sustainability goals during closure to capture lessons learned and drive continuous improvement.
