This year I've been mainly on maternity leave but I learned the importance of proper process for my colleagues. I've been reminded several times about how much having a smooth process makes life easier for everyone.

What have you learned this year from your projects?

I've learned to value every bit of expertise your colleagues, stakeholders, etc., bring to the table. You can learn something everyday from every interaction you have.

This year I've learned not to make assumptions and that things are not always as they seem. There's often a back story and other factors affecting a situation that you may have no clue about. This year I presumed that certain things were much further along than they were in reality. The challenge is learning to work with it and roll with the punches.

I've learned that taking the L--O--N--G view is often over-looked (if not under-valued) on projects, and that nothing of value can be achieved without persistence (another over-looked and under-rated quality in both project leaders and teams alike).

2014 was an enormous year of learning. Perhaps the biggest lessons came from an interview with Piers Steel, author of The Procrastination Equation.

As project managers we know the value of a deadline--it's something to shoot for. We also know that Student Syndrome is alive and well--that people on our teams often delay and then try to cram the work in at the end.

Steel breaks this all down in a very scientific way, with research that explains procrastination in an intriguing manner. But even better, he provides many helpful suggestions on how to fight the temptation to procrastinate.

The discussion with Piers is at http://www.PeopleAndProjectsPodcast.com/123 if you'd like to hear him talk about his ideas directly.

P.S. I also learned that I should have gotten to know Elizabeth Harrin years earlier. :)
