I am standing up a large project team where some of the members are centrally located and some are spread across the globe.  I am wondering what software people have had success with in conducting and maintaining scrum boards and meetings.

For managing Scrum boards with globally distributed teams, some widely used tools include:

Jira: Highly customizable, great for tracking sprints and integrating with other tools.
Trello: Simple and visual, ideal for smaller teams or less complex workflows.
Monday.com: User-friendly with versatile features for project tracking.
Asana: Combines Scrum features with broader project management capabilities.
Miro: Excellent for collaborative visual boards and sprint planning.

Jira is one of the most commonly used platforms and can be useful when it is used in conjunction with other Atlassian products such as Confluence for information capture. However, before starting with any such platform I'd suggest starting simple with a visual collaboration tool such as Miro or Mural so you can ensure there is consistent, quality updates happening before introduction something more advanced.

Had your team been colocated in a single location, I'd have recommended going with an old school whiteboard and sticky notes for the same reason.

And make sure the teams have some say in the selection and configuration of the tools as it should be their (and not your) way of working.

The important thing is the process and to make it happened. I used lot of tools from 1995 starting from MS Excel and some tools created by the company where I worked on. Today, we are using Azure Devops and Jira Align.
