Ai is a board term. Just in case you are searching for something related to "the new kid on the block" generative AI then the 3 courses delivered for free by the PMI could help you. Mainly because in this case Responsible AI demands to include new roles. After more than 40 years leading programs and projects where AI component is included let me say "nothing new below the sun". It is like to manage any other type of projects with any other type of components, mainly where software and hardware are included.

Hello Susan, If you are a member of PMI, you will also be able to access reports and the AI Essentials for Project Professionals guide for free. Check this page https://www.pmi.org/learning/ai-in-project-management

PMI is also working on a "Standard for Artificial Intelligence in Portfolio, Program, and Project Management".

Susan -

A lot depends on what the purpose of the AI project is, what tools it will be using, the nature of the data used to train the AI, what impact it will have on existing staff work and so on.

Developing a focused model to handle a specific internal activity which will assist existing staff is a whole different ball game than creating a Gen AI-based model which will use a combination of internal and external data and potentially reduce the responsibilities or eliminate specific roles.

Managing an AI project effectively involves setting clear goals, ensuring access to quality data, and assembling a skilled team with AI expertise. It requires an iterative approach to develop and refine models, regular communication with stakeholders, and continuous monitoring after deployment to ensure the solution remains effective.

The key is to align technical execution with business objectives for meaningful outcomes.

Managing AI project is similar like managing any other type of projects with any other type of project life cycle. But its good to have fair understanding on the AI, AI in Project Management, Prompting. Also some basic details about Data and Data science since AI models are based on Data. Suggesting you to go over the PMI AI Courses here: https://www.pmi.org/learning/ai-in-project-management

From my experience working with learners and teams, most AI projects fail due to poor project framing and unrealistic expectations, not lack of models.
We’ve designed AI & GenAI initiative training at Credo Systemz specifically to help professionals:
  • Scope AI projects correctly
  • Align business goals with AI feasibility
  • Manage vendors, data teams & timelines
  • Measure success beyond POCs
If you’re serious about managing AI initiatives end-to-end, structured training like this makes a big difference.
