As project managers, conflicts are inevitable, whether they arise between team members, stakeholders, or within the project scope itself. Emotional intelligence (EI) often plays a critical role in resolving these conflicts effectively.

How do you apply emotional intelligence in conflict resolution? Are there specific strategies or techniques you’ve found particularly useful in diffusing tensions and fostering collaboration? I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences!

A lot depends on your role in the conflict. If you are one of the people directly involved, self-awareness and self-management is extremely important to ensure you don't allow an amygdala hijack to make you say or do something unwise. If you are a third-party attempting to manage a conflict between others, relationship building and empathy are very important to help you understand where each party is coming from and to have them trust you to help them through the conflict.

Hi both,

I would like to join @Kiron in the point about self-awareness and even more important self-regulation - independent of your role in the conflict. I myself am rather in the role of the third party intervening in projects or being the translator between project and management.

First of all, I pay attention to each individual's motivators, interests, values, and identity. Understanding these personal aspects helps in identifying what drives each team member and stakeholder, which is essential in conflict resolution. By mapping out these elements within the team, I can discern what factors are favorable for creating strong team bonds and what might be causing friction. This understanding enables me to address issues that may hinder collaboration and ensure that all stakeholders are aligned with the project's goals. The key here is to focus on the shared objectives and encourage everyone to work collectively towards those goals.
