What a great question! I think the best way to motivate team members is to remind them of why they are working on such a big project. Maybe its needed for the company to succeed, or part of getting a big sale, or just complicated and complex.

It might be worth reminding them too of their successes. If they've been on it a long time, I'm sure you have successes you can use ("we've already done this" or "this came in early - how amazing is that!").

Good luck and stay positive :-)

I think one way to keep members motivated is to remind them of their goal and find a way to show them just how far they've progressed - even something as simply as a chart (think of how the RedCross does for blood drives) showing progress can inspire members to keep at it and push harder.

Great suggestion Rebecca! Having a visual aid is always important!

Food always helps :)

But seriously, gratitude is key Little things like thank you cards, happy birthday, and "attaboys" go a long way in motivation. Silent gratitude is not gratitude.

I have also found great success with random things such as sending the attached comic to the team

Thanks David! You're absolutely right that the little things really matter. They don't need to be costly (most are free) as long as they make the recipient feel valued for their contribution....

People are quite perceptive. They know clearly if you care about their personal goals or achievements or not. Beware of same size fits all approaches though. Everyone is different and you need to make a judgement of how to motivate each individual.

Aejaz, Thanks for raising a key point to lead a long project.

I like the fantastic idea "Birthday & Thanks you card" given by David.

Dr. John Kotter in his amazing fable, "Our Iceberg is Melting" identified how much recognition and award is important to move a BOLD change/project successfully.
The step No.6 of Leading Bold Change (LBC) formula has been demonstrated "Short Term Win" as a mandatory point/step to make a BOLD change or long project happen.

Project manager needs to apply more leadership approaches than controlling and monitoring tasks and activities to keep his team and also stakeholders motivated.

Delegation, involvement and more contribution to decisions making sessions will help to keep members longer on project with full of energy !

Offer opportunities for self-development. The members of your team will be more valuable to your organization, and to themselves, when they have opportunities to learn new skills.
