In a world that lacks an emotional intelligence approach, how can we ensure that project managers possess emotional intelligence in order to inspire their team to achieve ambitious project goals? The successful delivery of a project is significantly influenced by the flexibility and effectiveness of how everyone contributes to its execution. As project managers, how do we motivate and inspire our teams to achieve ambitious project goals?

Why do you say the "world" lacks an EI approach? EI is a well understood concept and Goleman's book is decades old by now. PMs who don't understand the importance of EI and who don't take effort to improve their competency across the four quadrants are unlikely to be overly successful. A combination of coaching, formal training and feedback along with a healthy dose of mindfulness can help one improve.

If you accept ambiguous project goals then you are lost. Project goals must not be ambiguous.

That's a good point, Sergio: Project goals must not be ambiguous.

Then what should we do if we only have (yet) ambiguous goals? This the case quite often.

Mandela,
all leadership teachings I know of at least touch on emotional intelligence, awareness among PMs should exist.
Maybe we need more practice and feedback on EI, so that PMs experience its value.
Motivation and Inspiration are supported by just one of the four elements of EI: how do we engage with others, influence them, making them listen? We can and should practice this in our social lives, with kids, spouses, and friends, and you know if we are good at it or need to improve.
