A small PMO can gain recognition by demonstrating its value by aligning its projects with the organization's strategic objectives, communicating results clearly and building strong relationships with stakeholders.

Improving the ROI of portfolio investments by improving the leadership team's portfolio decision making and by reducing cost of delay in delivering project value are two ways a PMO can be seen as a valued contributor.

However, in most organizations, a PMO is viewed as an enabler for project management which is still not the ultimate vision of project management as an organization-wide competency.

Fabian,

You are right, but we can be more specific. The organization consists of many stakeholders and competing interests.

As value is in the eye of the beholder and different over time, we should specify which stakeholder we want to demonstrate our value to and make sure we understand what they would perceive our results as valuable now.

For example, a CEO once asked me to reduce his time spent on project escalations. More typically, CIOs ask to make their project portfolio more transparent.

It always depends on the context.

If you need to demonstrate value, you should deliver value to the stakeholders by for example, improving projects ROI, efficiency, and other metrics that are set by the organization.
