Academic research should address practical problems faced by project managers and organizations. This question examines whether research topics are relevant and contribute to solving real-world challenges in the field.

In project management, I'd suggest that research does directly impact practical application because even if we are talking about a theoretical model, we are able to apply that model to a real world situation.

When I attended one of PMI's last Research & Education conferences almost 15 years ago, every presentation I attended had some practical applications, if not immediately, then once the research conclusions were available.

Francisco, most of them do address practical problems and needs. Take PMI’s Thought Leadership articles and recent reports, as an example!

It depends on industry, geographical location, university, etc.

Yes it's true academic research should address practical problems faced by project managers and organizations, but it's also true that all research doesn't have to be necessarily useful for practical purposes, it can also be purely theoretical and still contribute in the development of better processes, theories, etc. that eventually could bring other completely new and valuable ways of thinking that could solve important problems in the future. Practice and theory should be addressed in any field of knowledge by the academy.
