Advanced degrees may provide a competitive advantage for career advancement. This question investigates whether MSc and PhD graduates experience faster career progression compared to their peers with only a bachelor's degree.

Context counts and it depends (the only correct answers to ANY such question in our profession :-) ).

If the industry & company you are in values higher degrees or requires them to attain a specific level, then yes, those are of value. In other industries or companies they might create a perception of being overqualified for the needs of a job.

Francisco, in my opinion, career advancement is driven primarily by experience and performance. Credentials, whether industry-specific certifications or university degrees, indicate a level of knowledge but do not necessarily reflect one’s ability to perform a job effectively.

Moreover, I find that in today’s job market, industry-specific certifications often hold more value than higher-level university degrees, except in academic fields.

It varies based on the individual, industry, market, field of study, and ... .

Absolutely agree with Kiron and Rami:
For entry level the gratuation level might be a plus - but once you are on the job, titles become less and less important

Advanced degrees can offer a competitive edge, especially in research-heavy or specialized fields. However, career progression often depends on experience, skills, networking, and job performance rather than just qualifications. In some industries, MSc or PhD holders may advance faster, while in others, practical experience carries more weight. A balanced mix of education and hands-on expertise is usually the key to long-term success. Would love to hear others’ experiences on this!
