The most important thing to me is practicing active listening. You will never become an expert in all the many specialties involved, so it is important to learn about the major risks of each to understand important focus areas.

I'll echo Keith's vote for active listening and add critical EI-related competencies to the mix, especially when dealing with challenging stakeholders across those teams.

Good communication and a little understanding of all the specialties involved. Ensuring good alignment with organizational values and objetives in all members is also very important so all teams can look for the same goal.

Great points! I completely agree that clear communication, trust-building, and early expectation setting are critical for leading cross-functional teams.
When it comes to handling competing priorities, I focus on aligning tasks with the project's overall objectives and business impact. I also involve key stakeholders in prioritization discussions to ensure transparency and buy-in. Additionally, breaking down deliverables into smaller, manageable tasks helps the team stay focused without feeling overwhelmed.
I’d love to hear—how do you ensure stakeholder alignment when priorities shift mid-project?

Thank you all for sharing such insightful perspectives! I completely agree—active listening truly is the cornerstone of leading cross-functional teams. It not only helps in understanding the unique risks and priorities of each specialty but also positions the project manager as a bridge builder who can translate needs and foster collaboration.
Adding emotional intelligence (EI) to the mix is crucial as well, especially when navigating diverse stakeholder expectations. Clear communication, paired with a basic understanding of each team's domain, ensures alignment with overarching organizational goals.
In my experience, encouraging shared ownership of project outcomes also strengthens team cohesion.
