Emmanuel Ashitey Project budgets start with listing tasks, estimating costs for people, tools, and materials, adding extra for risks, and getting approval. Tracking spending helps avoid overspending and stay on track.

Ideally, the budget is based on a good understanding of what is to be done, how it is to be done, and the costs involved. However, in the real world, sometimes budgets are set long before a PM and team get involved and they end up having to manage within those.

The quickest way to get to a budget estimate is analogous. You build a house and ask neighbors what they paid. Five minutes.

Sometimes budgets are built as Pavan describes by creating a breakdown of the work involved, estimating the costs by task, and factoring in additional budget for overhead and risk.

In other cases, there may be a cost benefit analysis for the project budget that would result in the project breaking even, profitable, or even an acceptable loss.
Budget decisions and processes can vary across organizations. Startups may have different approaches compared to large-scale businesses, which often follow standardized and systematic processes.
I can't say what is exactly right for you, but generally, the first step is understanding your project's high-level requirements, including scope, benefits, resources, alignment with the business case, key milestones, and whether there's an initial budget planned by the sponsor.
Organizations often estimate budgets based on past projects, using analogous cost estimation. In some cases, departments are allocated fixed budgets, and they must ensure that projects stay within those limits.
If you want a more precise approach, you will need a well-defined scope, requirements, timeline, and quality plan. Using the Work Breakdown Structure (WBS), you can estimate costs bottom-up by assessing each task and activity.
For more details on budget processes, it’s best to check with your organization. Alternatively, for a standardized approach, you can refer to PMBOK 6th & 7th editions, which provide comprehensive insights into project cost management.

I think it depends really on what kind of budget you want to do, but i think Shruti Shailesh Lohade explained it really well here. Otherwise i say utilise Ai tools, they are quite user friendly and can understand your goal for your budget. If you apply Shruti Shailesh Lohade requirements and put it into Chatgpt , with your specific formats, layouts and your own needs and wants you can easily get a bugdet.

But i would highly recommend you do your research if you havent done a budget
