As construction activities continue to impact the environment, designing projects with lifecycle sustainability in mind has emerged as a critical imperative. How can construction projects be designed with lifecycle sustainability in mind, including considerations for demolition, recycling, and repurposing of materials?

Thank you very much for asking a timely question and I have been working on sustainable development projects for the last 10 years. From my experience, I would like to say that designing construction projects with lifecycle sustainability involves a holistic approach that considers environmental, social, and economic impacts from inception to demolition.

Key strategies include sustainable design and planning, such as using passive design principles and selecting eco-friendly, durable, and locally sourced materials. During construction, waste reduction, energy efficiency, and water conservation are prioritized. Operational phases focus on energy and water efficiency, indoor environmental quality, and smart building technologies.

End-of-life considerations emphasize designing for deconstruction, recycling, and adaptive reuse to minimize waste. Engaging stakeholders, adhering to green building certifications, and conducting lifecycle assessments further ensure sustainability throughout the project's lifecycle.

Great feedback, Golam! I completely agree that taking a holistic approach is crucial and so is embracing systems thinking.

I am currently enrolled in a course offered by Green Project Management (GPM) on Regenerative Leadership. It emphasizes how a regenerative leader aims to create systems that are restorative, resilient, and adaptable, fostering life-affirming organizations, teams, and communities so it goes beyond sustainability.
