I was curious what people here thought - I would imagine most would say PMP since this is a Project Management focused site. However, you never know?

What are your opinions and advice for someone considering one of these two certifications?

Here is an article about this topic at the ITSM Review:

Steven, I would suggest that anyone whose focus is change management should consider Prosci, rather than ITIL.

Learn both. Certification in either is a good idea but understanding how the PMP and ITIL complement each other is truly a value added benefit.

A general rule with any decision of this nature is to ask yourself the following questions:
1. What do I need right now to do the job I have?
2. What credentials will assist me with my career aspirations?

And as a general rule, education of any form is never wasted and you will always learn something

I had the same question in my mind last year before I appear in PMP exam. And settled for PMP because I found it closer to what I had been doing, managing projects which were not related to IT service management.

I suggest the following path:

1. ITIL v3 Foundation then Practitioner (This allows to have a good knowledge and background on ITSM)

2. PMP (The best for Project Managers and even for people willing to take an MBA class)
