I was brought in as a consultant for a company that, despite lacking a formal project management structure, was still delivering projects successfully. It was an unusual situation because there were no official project management processes, yet the projects were consistently completed on time and within scope. Different project managers each had their own approach, and the teams were dynamic, constantly shifting between projects. This resulted in a siloed working environment.
The top management, however, felt that there should be a more consistent approach to project management, with standardized methods, tools, language, and so on. Their request was for me to create a new, unified system. Rather than starting from scratch, I decided to focus on the project managers who were most successful and analyze their approaches. I selected the best practices from these project managers and formalized their methods into a cohesive framework. This allowed me to create a consistent, structured project management system that aligned with the company's existing practices, while still fulfilling management's request for uniformity and consistency across projects.
