Retirement marks a significant transition in a project manager's career, and it can be both exciting and challenging. As we prepare for this new chapter, it’s essential to consider how to make the most of our retirement years.

1. What steps should project managers take to ensure a smooth transition into retirement?
2. How can they effectively transfer their knowledge and experience to the next generation of project managers?

Given that I retired at the end of 2024, this is something I'm fairly familiar with. The transition happened over a series of roles which took me from active delivery responsibilities to governance to teaching. And I give back to the profession through:

- My article & book writing & presentations over the past fifteen years
- Contributing to multiple PMI standards & practice guides
- Responding to questions in this community
- Mentoring individual PM practitioners

I would agree with Kiron in terms of volunteering and mentorship but aside from this, they should enjoy their life!

For yourself: stay active, keep learning, care more about your health, and nurture your community (people with many social contacts live longer). Become wiser.

For society: give back, volunteer (in PM as Kiron says but also in the local neighborhood/NGO), present, mentor, write, and research.

I retired in 2014, then I embarked on getting my PgMP, got a diploma for company direction from IoD, was again elected to PMI's Board, started my dissertation, and, yes, earned some money with occasional engagements.

A very valuable reflection. Retirement is not only the closing of a stage, but also an opportunity to leave a lasting legacy. 🌟 1️⃣ For a smooth transition, project managers can plan ahead, ensuring financial stability and exploring new ways to stay active, such as mentoring or consulting. 2️⃣ Transferring knowledge is key: mentoring programs, participation in professional communities and documenting best practices can ensure that the next generation continues to grow with a solid foundation. What strategies have you found most effective for sharing your experience before you retire?
