A key learning for me early in my PM career was that knowing where you are (progress-wise) is not as important as understanding how you got there.

Personal relationships matter. The better people respect and like you the more you'll be able to accomplish. Conversely, if you make enemies you might find your endeavors thwarted despite you best efforts.
