As AI continues to advance and evolve into more independent decision maker;
1) How AI could move beyond operational tasks and take on more complex strategic responsibilities?
2) Will AI consider the importance of transparency and ethics in its decision-making processes?
3) From a forward-looking perspective on how AI might change the dynamics of project management in the coming years?
4) Can AI enhance efficiency and replace where human intuition, experience, and leadership are irreplaceable?
5) What are varied insights on the future integration of AI tools with human project management expertise?

This has been a topic of importance and at the same time controversy as well. Interestingly in my experience, people who work is the data science and artificial intelligence industry say that in future, AI will replace humans. At the same time, people working in the project management an almost every other industry say that AI wont replace everything but humans will have to stay updated to use AI tools in their everyday work life. So, the strategic decision making part by AI still has a long way to go because right now we have Gen AI tools which seems to deliver the right answers but in reality makes mistakes as well which can be costly in decision making. So, that definitely needs to improve massively if we are looking at strategic decision making by AI.

Its not that will AI consider transparency and ethics.... it should consider them. Without transparency and security, AI is just another tool out there.

AI may be able to judge scenarios and deliver appropriate results although, a human check is definitely needed along with that. To what extent, AI or Gen AI can judge, we will have to wait and see.

AI can replace repetitive tasks as seen with automations in project management but as said before, replacing human experience, emotions and feelings only happen in movies and certain protoypes. Implementing that in real life comes with its share of privacy, data security and moral issues as well. What the future holds, no one can say but AI taking over everything done by humans is definitely very very distant in project management.

These are good forward looking questions for leadership teams to consider. Assuming that the tools continue to evolve from a capability but more important quality perspective such that their decision making functions and outputs can be trusted and are not biased, there will certainly come a time when a large percentage of the tactical and strategic work performed by project decision makers including the PM, sponsor and other key stakeholders could be delegated to AI.

However, it will be a REALLY long time before critical people oriented activities such as stakeholder engagement, team development, conflict resolution and working towards consensus can be delegated. In such activities, AI will continue to assist and advised but not own.

AI is a board term. We are using AI from more than 40 years ago including all related to project management. What made a disruption is the new model of generative AI. Relating to that, all roles related to project/program/portfolio management "are dead" in the way they were originally defined.

Akshatha, for now, I believe decision-making will be human centered but AI can definitely provide insights and predictive analytics to help with more evidence-based decision making.

As for stakeholders engagement, while in the far future, such tasks can be delegated to AI, I don't see this happening anytime soon because in my humble opinion, nothing replaces human to human interaction and connection.

AI is evolving beyond the operational to assume a strategic role in project management, providing predictive analytics and optimized decision making. However, its effectiveness will depend on ethical and transparent integration, where human oversight remains key. Going forward, AI will transform PMO dynamics by automating processes and enabling a more strategic approach, although intuition, leadership and human expertise will remain irreplaceable. The real challenge will be to strike a balance between technological efficiency and human value, building a synergy that enhances project management without dehumanizing it.

These are excellent questions, but I think they do not refer to the future of AI but rather to the present. Humans are apprehensive and wary by nature in the face of ambiguity, however. I believe using AI beyond operational tasks is inevitable. As for AI's transparency and ethics, it lies within the provided data for training and testing. Furthermore, with time, AI can enhance efficiency and replace areas where human intuition, experience, and leadership are required. But, will it?!! Finally, as long as AI tasks are controlled and checked by humans, an integration between AI tools and human expertise must be achieved by each and all project managers to enhance project efficiency and achieve prosperity.
