Hello Project Manager community,

I hope you're all doing well. With over 13 years of experience as a Senior 3D Animator, including leadership roles in the animation industry, I am looking to transition into Project Management. The main reason behind this shift is lack of job security and low pay. I’m eager to understand whether this shift is feasible and how I can best position myself for success in this new path. Now, I have done my 2 cents of research on this topic using combined brains of google and chatGPT but, I wanted to know some on ground human perspectives. In particular, I would appreciate any insights on the following:
1) Key certifications or training that would be valuable for someone transitioning from a creative background into Project Management.
2) Realistic timelines for making a successful transition and what challenges to anticipate.
3) Expected salary ranges for entry-level Project Management roles, particularly in the creative industry.
4) The current state of the Project Management industry—Is it experiencing steady growth, and is it a stable career path moving forward?
5) How we, as future Project Managers, can integrate AI into our learning and work practices to stay ahead in this evolving field.
6) How soon can I start working. For example, if I attain the CAPM certification, is it easy to find entry level jobs then ?
Your expertise and advice would be invaluable to me as I take this next step in my career.
Thank you for your time and guidance!
Best regards,
Akshay Poddar

Hi Akshay, thanks for sharing your story. Here are some ideas that hope it helps:

1 - Start with free webinars and videos – You can find a lot on pmi.org , LinkedIn, and YouTube. These can help you understand the PM role and if it fits your interests.

2 - Transition depends on your effort and local job market – Some people find a job fast; others need more time. But your animation background and leadership experience will help for sure

3 - Check the “Pulse of the Profession” report from PMI. It shows what’s happening in the PM world.

4 - I feel it’s a stable career...Some people worry about AI, but I see it more as a support tool. It helps us do better work

5 - PMI also has AI resources for project managers. Check them out if you’re curious how AI connects with project work.

6 - Networking and volunteering are great ways to start. You can join project-based volunteer roles while preparing for a certification like CAPM. It gives you experience and connections.

Wishing you all the best!
