GPS =/= Global positioning System but GPS = Geographical Positioning System. Why? Do you understand the difference in these terms and why the misnomer? UNat Modula-2 landing page Saving Changes...
Good point Keith. I believe any object in the universe can be located with reference to one's position on the earth or relative to the position of the instigator in space. That is what I consider Star wars technologies. Space objects may move in time due to thrust or other remote control from earth. And if you want to know where the opposing side's object is you need GPS
No Star Wars technology required. Voyager 1 launched in 1977 and uses a star tracking system. Saving Changes...

Hi Keith, I respect your opinion. But I believe in progress and we always need to progress technologies. Also the technologies of Voyager 1 which you have mentioned, can be improved and mutated into something more advanced for our new technological world and the future.
We usually do not re-start from scratch, we stand mostly on the shoulders of giants, like mathematicians, physicists, computer scientists and others to improve and develop new technologies. One should never be satisfied with what one has achieved already but always innovate on what exits.
Cheers! I really enjoyed reading you. Jean

Jean,
I must admit that I feel your topics sound a bit like trying to research plot elements for a spy novel than project management. I won't debate you on the engineering principles that behind GPS. It is discussed frequently in various higher level engineering courses because it makes a perfect "textbook" example of measurement precision limits based on mathematical laws and ultimately Heisenberg's uncertainly principle. "Why" usually takes about a 20-30 minute lecture.
When you can understand the importance of the following mathematical fact, you will have come a far way in understanding the limits of GPS and why you wouldn't use it to locate objects far from earth: Sin 0 = 0 or the commonly used small angle approximation heuristic: "The sin of a small angle is a small number."
On the subject of project management, GPS could be used as a metaphor to explain why there are many delivery frameworks intended to fit specific needs and if all you have is a hammer, all problems look like a nail which yields poor results in brain surgery.

Hi Keith, thank you for your opinion. I believe Project Management englobes all human inventions, and activities. From the building of the Pyramids to the building of the Great Wall of China and other human feats That is why projectmanagement.com forum has so many topics that we can discuss on. We learn from past successful projects and from past unsuccessful projects. To understand success or failures of a project we need the context of the history of the project and learn what should be done for a project to have better probability of success and what not to do to avert failure of the project. It is in this way that my posts tie with the subject of Project Management. The FACTS that I mention are verifiable by anybody and can be disproved and rejected by any if they are not satisfied with the facts I have put forward. It's the same thing as the discussion of if God exists? Some will find their own life experiences as facts that God exists others will find their life experiences as reflecting the inexistence of God. So the final conclusion will depend on each individual. There is no blanket belief of Yes God exist or God does not exist.
Anyone with access to the Landing page of Modula-2 of DoD US version from 1987 to 1992, showing traffic in the City Of New York, can check if the landing page looks exactly like the GPS apps or with some minor twists we are using nowadays and ask Why the same User Interface screen?
