Proactive planning and adaptable execution can certainly help but like everything, they have their limits. For example, a project running on waterfall methodology will definitely benefit from proactive planning. But think of a scenario where a project has been handed to you that was initially handled by another project manager. I have handled something like this and the usual strategies never work in this case. We definitely have to improvise and work out of the box. It totally depends on the situation, project, stakeholders and of course, senior management. Sometimes we might have the right strategy but pressure from senior management might force us onto another path. Constantly being in touch with the team and ensuring that a project manager is approachable and reliable in different situations is one way to foster collaboration. It can take a considerable amount of time as well.
