PM for a better world - How can PMI light the way towards a better future?

We’re living in a time of big challenges. Climate change, food insecurity, war, and growing inequality. These issues often feel overwhelming, but what if part of the solution lies in something we as project professionals do every day?

We break down complexity. We bring structure where there’s uncertainty. We turn ideas into action.

Project management is more than planning tasks, it’s about aligning people, adapting to reality, and keeping momentum going, even when resources are limited. From my own experience working in global fisheries and supporting non-profits for refugee education in Malawi as a PMWB volunteer, I’ve seen how project management can truly empower teams and drive meaningful impact.

As PMI members, we have the mindset and tools to be part of the change. And that’s why I’d love to open up this conversation to all of you:

· How do you think project management can help build a better future?
· Have you been part of a project that made a difference in your community, company, or team?
· What skills or lessons would you share with others trying to do the same?

Let’s share stories, ideas, and  inspire each other to do more, with purpose and structure.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

I truly believe project management has a powerful role to play in creating a better future. Our ability to bring structure, clarity, and collaboration into complex, high-stakes environments is a skillset that can directly support global causes.
In my own journey from a developer to a project leader and consultant, I’ve consistently focused on applying technology purposefully to improve processes and deliver value. This mindset is equally relevant in social impact initiatives—where efficiency, adaptability, and sustainability matter even more due to limited resources.
I’ve seen that even small contributions—like mentoring project teams, simplifying workflows for NGOs, or volunteering expertise—can create ripple effects. The key lies in leading with empathy, communicating with purpose, and bringing people together around a shared mission.

Hi Ashwin Kumar H M,

Thank you so much for your thoughtful response. Your point about how even small contributions can create a powerful ripple effect reminded me of the message “Help one, help many" that Mick Ebeling from Not Impossible Labs shared at the opening of the GSS Europe in Barcelona. Here’s a truly inspiring story from their work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a-3NHO_NZX4

Your experience is a great example of how project managers from diverse backgrounds can bring their unique expertise to strengthen how project management contributes to a better world.

Thanks again for sharing!

Hi Arturo,

I completely agree that project management is a powerful tool for driving change.

In my own experience, I worked on an engineered sanitary landfill project in the Gulf countries that not only improved waste management but also educated the community about sustainability.

It was amazing to see how structured planning and collaboration made a real difference!

Hi Md. Golam,

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! That sanitary landfill project sounds like a great example of how technical project work can have both environmental and community-level impact. Stories like yours really show how structured planning and collaboration can translate into meaningful, real-world change.
It’s also a reminder of how one action—like improving waste management—can resonate and help many, by also educating the community about sustainability. That kind of multiplie effect is truly powerful.

It’s inspiring to hear how others are using their PM skills to make a difference. I’m excited to see what other stories come up!

"Impartial observers from other planets would consider ours an utterly bizarre enclave if it were populated by birds, defined as flying animals, that nevertheless rarely or never actually flew. They would also be perplexed if they encountered in our seas, lakes, rivers and ponds, creatures defined as swimmers that never did any swimming. But they would be even more surprised to encounter a species defined as a thinking animal if, in fact, the creature very rarely indulged in actual thinking."
