Yes, you're right — my query was around ensuring alignment across departments within an organization, especially when day-to-day busyness causes teams to lose sight of the bigger picture.
What I meant to ask is:
Should there be a Key Result Area (KRA) or common goal that is added across all departments, which reinforces alignment with the organization’s overall strategic goals — beyond department-specific KRAs?
Would love to hear your thoughts or experiences on how other organizations handle this.
normally I would suppose that a company strategy is cascaded coming from a company vision and company goals and focus areas that are beeing broken down into e.g., business unit specific goals followed by department specific goals etc...
I would also assume that there are KPIs to measure on a monthly or quarterly basis the performance of the individual departments and the contributions to the overall strategic objectives.
Given there is a strategy deployment as described above (which is the case in the company I work for), I would not need additional KRAs etc.

Atul, The common KRAs differ across organizations, but it certainly helps if you have some people devoted to understanding what those KRAs are, and how various projects support them directly or indirectly.
My current job title is a Program Integration Manager. My responsibility is to focus on the higher level KRAs to ensure we have the right balance of focus between the participating technical disciplines and projects.
What might be best for one group could cost another 6X the effort, so people like me help ensure that we don't sub-optimize one area resulting in a much greater detriment to others. What might benefit one project might also adversely affect others so I often have to look across the entire landscape of work to understand the interrelations.
While I manage projects, I manage them from a perspective of what is best for the larger program, rather than for any individual project.

It is a question that deserves a long answer. But I will try to go for what I understand are key points. Adding to that I am in charge of working on topics related to AI but mainly GenAI in the largest consulting firm in the world. GenAI will help to align the whole organization to common goals but you need to understand what GenAi really is and plan very carefully in that sense. I am doing that right now. At the end, it is nothing new below the sun. Depending the way your organization needs, it starts from defined value streams based on Persona and then defining the products and from it define OKRs that will help to align the whole organization. With that, you can decide what steps in the value stream can be automated used GenAI. Today, in my personal experience, GenAI is a must but it is just a tool, not more than that. Saving Changes...
