Hello fellow PMs,

If you had to choose one book on Leadership that you've read, which one would you recommend?

Thanks,

The best book I've read on how to be an effective leader is Execution: The Discipline of Getting Things Done by Larry Bossidy and Ram Charan.

You may feel it's a little bit off-topic as it does not focus on the soft skills a leader needs, but as PMs getting things done is the name of the game and I learned a lot about effective leadership from this book.

There are many great books on leadership. I would recommend reading "Act Like a Leader, Think Like a Leader" written by Herminia Ibarra.

"Out of the Crisis" by W. E. Deming

"Leadership 101" by John Maxwell

Results Without Authority by Tom Kendrick. It's great for project leaders where you don't necessarily have the team working for you.

Books CANNOT teach you leadership. But if you want a summarized lesson, watch Spartacus from Starz network: http://goo.gl/YgmF8C

There are many amazing books about leadership.
Too many, too good to be reduced to only one I think.

Maybe you can start by one of them and then continue to read many others :).

I also agree with the fact that reading should come accompanied by practice. Leadership practice can not be replaced by anything else.

Some cool books on the subjects:
-Leaders eat last (Simon Sinek)
-Primal leadership (Daniel Goleman)
-The 21 indispensable qualities of a leader (John C. Maxwell)
-The five dysfunctions of a team (Patrick Lencioni)

Just to name a few to start with.

Hope you enjoy them!

Great conversation here...

First of all I think the question was recommending a book on leadership we've read...:)

It's great to read stories, tips, techniques, theories of leadership told by experts; it allows you to reflect and incorporate reading into your personal growth and development plan as a leader.

Read on to LEAD!

I'd read some many but would recommend a few for the following reasons:

Are You a PMP Managing a Project? Read The Five Dysfunctions of a Team
Are You a PM, PgMP Leading a Project? Read 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership
Are You Leading a Program or Portfolio? Read the Five Levels of Leadership
Are You a BA? Read Business Analysis and Leadership
Are You a CAPM? Read the Seven Habit of Highly Effective People
Are You a PfMP: Read Sometimes You Win Sometime You Learn
