The essence of growing a successful business in a competitive environment is responsiveness to customer demands. Essentially, the product provider with the better appreciation for a client's needs will be at a competitive advantage. If one is competing on price then if is sufficient to offer a product that meets some minimum requirements. However, when one seeks to compete on quality, it is imperative to go beyond the sales argument. In such a case, there are pre-sales as well after-sales matters to be taken into account. And these considerations are vital for the expansion of the enterprise.
What this means in terms of "job security" is that in a free market the only "job security" is customer satisfaction.
And customer satisfaction is achieved by understanding the role you can potentially play the the life of a customer. Like all of us, customers seek satisfaction of needs along the lines of Maslow's hierarchy. Given any two technically equal products competing on quality, the winner will tend to be the one that offers other benefits related to "esteem" for example.
