Industrial Engineer Experience for Project Management

I have been working as an Industrial/Manufacturing Engineer for 5 years. I have some improvement projects to count towards my experience, but the main driver of my project management experience to meet the 3 year requirement has been in the milestone scheduling, analysis, coordination, and risk mitigation of the modification of aircraft. Each aircraft has a unique work scope given their use in the customer's fleet, but is this too close to being considered operational to count towards my experience for a PMP application?

Eric, you don’t need to have the official post of a Project Manager to be able to apply. As long as you’re been doing PM activities day to day (which I assume you do from what you’re mentioned, you should be fine but need to be cautious how you reflect this experience in your application. Good Luck!

Hi Eric,
I agree with Rami. I have about 30 years experience as an engineer in the aircraft industry, including heavy mods and manufacturing. I can assure you that what you're describing counts as project management.

The overall products are large and complex and PMs are working on portions of the planning, such as risk and schedule management, or logistics. Often as an engineer in a fairly responsible role, your time is split between the technical challenges and the planning.

Operations are ongoing but there are improvement or expansion projects. Sometimes the focus is process flow, a specific product function, or regulatory compliance but there are enough complexities and people involved that project management becomes a necessary evil if you will, to pull it all together.

I didn't study PM formally until about 10 years ago when I found out that a lot of my prior job responsibilities were described in the PMBoK.
Cheers,
Keith

That’s a great question — and it shows you’re taking the PMP® eligibility requirements seriously, as you should.

From what you’ve described, your experience seems very much aligned with what PMI looks for.
The key is being able to demonstrate that your role involved project management responsibilities across the five process groups: initiating, planning, executing, monitoring and controlling, and closing.

PMI doesn’t require that your projects be formally titled or from a specific industry.
What matters is that they were temporary initiatives with a defined start and end, delivering a unique result, and that you were responsible for leading or directing project work — not just performing operational tasks.

In your case:
- Aircraft modification with a unique scope per customer clearly qualifies as project work.
- Your mention of milestone scheduling, analysis, coordination, and risk mitigation points directly to core project management practices.
- If you had a leadership or coordination role (rather than simply executing tasks), then this experience should be considered valid.

When you complete your application, I’d suggest focusing on:
- The business value delivered by each initiative,
- The project lifecycle stages you were involved in,
- And the decisions or responsibilities you held that influenced outcomes.

Avoid using overly technical or operational language — instead, frame your work in terms of project management actions and results.

Best of luck on your PMP journey — it sounds like you’re well on your way!

As long as you are doing PM related activities, you can count them towards your certificate requirements.
