Hi guys,

I am working as an engineer in telecom industry, have much experience in doing related projects as an engineer as well as a team leader.
Now I am considering to transfer to be a PM. But I don't know how could I start it? I don't have any project management experience. Do I need get the PMP certification first? Am I eligible for PMP certification without project management experience?

Looking forward to getting the advice.
Thanks!

Hi,

As an engineer you will need "Minimum three years/36 months unique
non-overlapping professional project management experience during which at least 4,500 hours were spent leading and directing the project" and "35 contact hours of formal education"

Check out the PMP handbook for more information:

Good Luck

Now I wouldn't wait to start applying for PM positions before you earn your PMP. You probably already have the experience they are looking for, the trick is writing your resume or LinkedIn profile in a slightly different language to help them understand all your accomplishments. You can also then show them you are working towards a PMP and that will start to become icing on the cake.

Why are you wanting to switch to the position of project manager? Is it because the job sounds interesting, or merely a career move? Most engineers have project management experience, in fact, engineers with a PMP can be incredibly valuable on any project.

My recommendation, get the training up front. Register for and complete a PMP preparation class, or take some PMI based project management classes at a local college. Learn the vocabulary, and methodology, start applying it in your career, and then begin filling out your application to sit for your PMP exam, based on what you've learned.
