Quality related question, regarding an exam prep quiz

Hello,

I am currently preparing for the PMI exam, and while doing an Udemy exam prep quiz, I came across a question where I'm doubting if the provided answer is correct (according to the Udemy teacher, it is.)

May I have your input on this question?

The scenario was:
“You are the project manager for the Floor Installation Project. Today, you will meet with your project team to ensure the project is completed with no deviations from the project requirements.”

1) Quality planning (correct per Udemy)
2) Quality management
3) Quality control
4) Quality assurance

The quiz marks Quality Planning as the correct answer, explaining that this step involves setting quality standards and criteria before work begins. However, this is where the confusion lies, the scenario clearly states "today" and focuses on ensuring the project is completed with no deviations, which seems to place the activity during execution, not planning.

Based on my understanding of the PMBOK Guide:

Quality Planning refers to defining quality requirements and standards before work starts.

The activity described ensuring work is performed without deviation from requirements, fits the definition of Control Quality, which involves measuring, inspecting, and verifying deliverables to ensure they meet agreed standards.

The teacher told me in addition: "The implication in this question is that the project will be completed with no deviations. Quality planning should be completed prior to the work beginning and should thereafter be revisited as needed."

Could you confirm whether this might be an oversight or provide additional context if there's another interpretation I may have missed?

Thanks very much for your time and support

Patrick, the question appears somewhat vague in its wording. It could reasonably be interpreted in two different ways:

1) Planning Phase Interpretation: The phrase “to ensure the project is completed with no deviations from the project requirements” may suggest the team is meeting to develop or review quality standards and procedures, which would fall under Quality Planning.

2) Execution Phase Interpretation: Alternatively, the use of the word “today” and the context of actively engaging with the project team could imply the project is already underway. In that case, the focus is likely on ensuring ongoing adherence to quality standards, which would fall under Quality Management, encompassing both Quality Assurance and Quality Control.

Given these dual interpretations, it would be helpful if the question provided additional context, such as whether the project is in the planning or execution phase to ensure clarity and alignment with PMBOK terminology.

Rami, thank you very much for taking the time to address my question - your insight on it is very helpful !

Should I expect the PMP PMI examination to include such tricky examples or is it just one unfortunate case from this particular Udemy PMP Exam prep?

Thank you in advance!

Excellent question — and very relevant for anyone preparing for the PMP exam or any PMI certification. There’s an important conceptual and situational distinction here that’s worth clarifying.

Question Analysis
The key phrase in the scenario is: "Today, you will meet with your project team to ensure the project is completed with no deviations from the project requirements."
This places the action in the present and clearly focuses on execution and compliance with requirements — not on planning.

Therefore, the answer that best aligns with the PMBOK® Guide would be Control Quality.
This knowledge area is directly related to:
- Monitoring and measuring specific project results;
- Verifying that the work and deliverables meet the quality requirements;
- Identifying causes of unsatisfactory results and recommending corrective actions.

Quality Planning, on the other hand, occurs during the Planning Process Group and defines how the quality requirements will be met.
That is not what the scenario describes.

Validation with the PMBOK® Guide (6th and 7th editions):
- Quality Planning = prior definition of quality standards and criteria.
- Control Quality = verification that completed work meets the defined standards through inspections, tests, and measurements.

Regarding the instructor’s justification ("the statement implies the project will be completed without deviations"), this seems to me like a forced interpretation of the future tense, which overlooks the immediate action context clearly established by the word “today.”
In project management practice, this type of meeting is typical of execution reviews, inspections, or deliverable validations — not of planning.

Conclusion:
In my view, this Udemy quiz question contains a conceptual inconsistency and may mislead learners, especially those in exam preparation.
Ideally, the scenario should be rewritten to clearly match the intended knowledge area.
Otherwise, the correct answer should be Control Quality.

Thank you for bringing such a well-structured question — discussions like this help us refine both our theoretical understanding and practical application.
