ok, sorry for the "Lord of the Rings" reference, but I work for a small engineering company and my CEO invited me to lunch yesterday and asked for my input on tracking software change requests. I have been in the position of Project Manager / Production Manager for the last 6 months and he likes what I have done in that capacity. He now wants me to slowly work my way into managing more than production. I currently use a sophisticated spreadsheet for each build that encapsulates all the PM specificities, but now with software on the radar, I need to look for something that will allow me to manage a diverse series of projects (I can see customer service tasks painting the radar screen in the near future). These software change requests can take anywhere from 1 hour to several days and being a small company... well lets just say our s/w engineers uses sticky notes for tracking assignments.
Sticky notes can be a very powerful project management tool if you're using agile. I've run several projects using just those.
You might find this resource helpful for selecting a digital tool. It's a fairly comprehensive list of the software out there. What works for you might not be what works well for others.
