Will GenAI reshape project managers into strategic advisors rather than task managers, or could it risk making us less relevant?

Over the past year, I’ve seen AI tools gradually absorb tasks that once filled a project manager’s day, status reports, meeting minutes, risk summaries, and even parts of stakeholder communication. On one hand, this creates an opportunity: if AI takes care of the routine, PMs can focus on higher-value leadership and strategy. On the other hand, there’s a risk that stakeholders will see PMs as “less necessary” because the visible, tangible tasks are being automated. Will GenAI elevate PMs into more strategic roles, or quietly erode the unique value we bring?

That really comes down to what the PMs who now have freed up some time choose to do with that time. If they are able to actually demonstrate greater value add to their key stakeholders, that will be noticed. So this requires not just doing those more strategic activities but ensuring that there is visibility to them. Nothing new - PMs have always had to show their value!
