Hi Sundar,

Here's my personal opinion:

Regarding experience with being a Scrum Master, there's only one good way, a very obvious one, to gain experience... and that's acting as a Scrum Master or being a member in a Scrum team.

There's no substitute to practical engagement in projects using Scrum. You'll also get great experience working with great Scrum Masters within their team, even if you're not the Scrum Master.

There are some workshops, trainings and lots of great books on being a Scrum Master or about agile... all these do a great job getting you to know the basics of Scrum or agile... and also to enhance or advance your Scrum/agile abilities after you have considerable experience on the matter.

So, I'd try to sign up and work on as many agile projects as I can in order to gain Scrum/agile experience by working and being agile.

All this, of course, in my own personal opinion.

Hello Federico,
Thank you for taking time to respond my question. Yes. I agree there is no substitute than being a Scrum Master or to be part of Scrum team. My situation is that I had done my CSM certification since the organization I work was transitioning to Agile. I am looking for other opportunities and most organizations prefer a person with Agile experience or traditional & agile role. But unless one gets an Agile experience, one cannot showcase this in your resume. So I m looking for some options. Is there any way there are volunteer opportunities to be part of a scrum team or Scrum Master.

Hi Sundar,

For what I understand of what you're saying, it'd best benefit you to volunteer in projects that will be carried out using an agile framework or that you'll have freedom to manage the project using any means and methodologies you may want to achieve the results expected. This way you may use Scrum and work as the team's Scrum Master.

Regarding finding such opportunities, I would recommend you to go to the VRMS system from PMI. You'll find in in www.pmi.org/vrms.
You can log in with the same credentials you use to access www.pmi.org.

There you can search for opportunities from all over the world where PMI has chapters. You can filter and search them, and you can also apply directly from within the system.

I hope this helps you and you can find a great opportunity to volunteer and use all your learned agile skills.

Have a great week!

I did my CSM certification with Geoff Watts. There are several courses at Inspect and Adapt (https://inspectandadapt.com/). I agree with Sundar that there is only one way to gain experience in any field is to work in it. And I have been looking for such opportunities too. Thank you for the link, it sure helps.
