Wanting to gain my foot in the door

Hello everyone,
I am a graduate of human resources here in Mississauga, Canada. I have a CAPM and am almost 30 but I have been told by many folks at a certain age no one will hire you or even train you. I want to gain experience in project management but I feel the hiring managers just gatekeep or age discriminate.
I am excited to start from very low. Can someone be kind enough to give me some valuable insight or advice?

Furqan, the job market in Canada, especially in project management, is definitely competitive, and many employers do prioritize Canadian experience. With the current economic challenges, it’s not easy, but don’t let that discourage you. Whoever told you that no one will hire or train you at a certain age is simply wrong.

Many people successfully pivot into new careers later in life. A smart way to start is by aiming for a project coordinator role. It’s a great entry point that gives you hands-on experience and exposes you to the full scope of project management. Stay persistent because getting your foot in the door is the most important step.

Hard question to answer. Avoid things like "age discriminate" and concentrate in "why somebody will hire me". Remember: your CV is just to achieve the goal to get an interview. After that, it is up to you. Just to comment, I am 64 years old and I get a job in the top consulting firm in the world. It is not about age.

I agree with both Rami and Sergio.

Focus on what you like to do.

Don’t get discouraged, Furqan, you’re definitely not too late to build a PM career. Many project managers actually transition from other fields, including HR, because your background already gives you valuable stakeholder and people management skills. Start small with volunteering or supporting internal projects, even informally, to gain hands-on experience. Networking through PMI chapters or local meetups can also open real doors. Remember, curiosity and initiative often outweigh age or title when you show genuine commitment to learn and contribute.
