Risk Management in Agile

Hello everyone,

I'm currently preparing for the PMP exam and encountered a thought-provoking scenario involving agile risk management practices. I'd love to hear your perspectives on navigating decisions where agile principles intersect with traditional project management practices.

In agile projects, teams often prioritize responding swiftly to emerging risks and communicating changes with stakeholders. However, there's also a consideration for documenting significant changes to align stakeholders and maintain project transparency.

Given a scenario where an agile team faces a heightened risk, would you prioritize immediate contingency response and subsequent communication with stakeholders, or updating the "risk management plan "(not the risk register) to ensure comprehensive stakeholder alignment, transparency and then implement the plan?

The PMI Study Hall solution of the question says the correct answer is the second option but for me it does not align with the agile mindset.

I am eager to understand how other project managers balance these principles and what approaches have worked best in practice or on the exam.

Thank you in advance for sharing your experiences and insights!

Best regards

I can't comment on what a potential exam question might expect but in practice, teams following adaptive approaches are likely to take a pragmatic, proactive approach to addressing risks rather than just producing documentation. Practices such as early de-risking through use of techniques such as spikes or by having relative level of risk as a prioritization criterion support this. While they will document, it would be "fit for purpose" rather than just to satisfy an organizational requirement. And when it comes to apprising stakeholders, risk information might be shared in person OR might be available for stakeholders to pull via an information radiator.
