I already have my PMP and recently found out about the PMI-CP. Is there a "hierarchy" with the certifications? Does the PMP encapsulate all, or would yall consider the PMI-CP its own completely different cert? Saving Changes...
Based on my review of the Exam Content Outline for the PMI-CP, I'd view it as being complementary to the PMP rather than one being a superset of the other. There are certain topic overlaps between them (e.g. stakeholder engagement) but whereas the PMP provides broader coverage across all knowledge areas of the PMBOK Framework, the PMI-CP outline appears to show much deeper exploration of specific areas.
So, the combination of the two is likely better than just having one.

Jeremick, while the PMI-CP can definitely complement the PMP, it’s not necessarily a higher or lower certification, it’s more of a specialized credential. The PMP focuses broadly on project management principles that apply across industries, while the PMI-CP is tailored specifically for construction professionals, addressing the unique challenges, terminology, and workflows in that field.
From my experience, I learned a lot of concepts and best practices through the PMI-CP journey that weren’t covered in the PMP, particularly around construction-specific delivery methods, contract management, and risk in the built environment so if you work in or plan to move into the construction sector, I’d highly recommend pursuing the PMI-CP as it really deepens your understanding and strengthens your knowledge in that niche. I think there is no hierarchy — they serve different purposes. PMP is the broad, foundational certification covering project management across all industries and methods. PMI-CP, on the other hand, is a specialized certification focused on construction and the built environment. Having a PMP shows general project management mastery, while PMI-CP demonstrates domain-specific expertise in construction projects. They complement each other — PMP gives breadth, and PMI-CP adds depth. Saving Changes...
Hi all, really appreciate all the feedback. From the sounds of it seems like it would be an added benefit to have and complimentary to the PMP. I will definitely look into obtaining it in the future! Thank you all Saving Changes...
I need your help and input regarding the PMI CP credential. I have failed the exam for the second time argh!! My period ends Dec 23 2025 leaving me just over a month to study. I am +20years in this industry and regard myself as well experienced in effective communication. I am below target on Stakeholder Engagement and Contracts Management. Before I spend another $300 CA and 4 hours of my time, can anyone provide me with some tips? This is frustrating and embarrassing! Saving Changes...
