Is it a good idea for a project manger to play a dual role and serve as a subject matter expert?

Is it a good idea for a subject matter expert to play a dual role and serve as a project manager?

It is better for a project manager to act like a SME, so PM can drive project more effectively. However, SME usually may not have PM skills and require additional PM.

It is a given if a PM is a SME and will keep as a SME in his/her career. Benefits were addressed above. The pitfall could be that the PM may not be able to focus on manage the project at a high level, but may fall to details technical thinking and trouble shooting. The project may head to a risk without the full time proactive attention of the PM.
