I'm embarking on a new factory mega-project, with an investment exceeding US$1 billion. I am actively seeking experienced project managers who have successfully navigated projects of this scale. Would any seasoned professionals in this community be open to sharing their valuable insights, best practices, or lessons learned from managing such complex, large-scale factory constructions? Your guidance would be immensely appreciated.

If you haven't read it already, I'd strongly recommend reading Dr. Bent Flyvbjerg's book How Big Things Get Done as the covers lots of lessons learned regarding mega project delivery.

It is the same than planning any other type of project. Nothing new under the sun. I was in this situation.

Factories are capital investments that are part of the enabling architecture necessary to create products. The most challenging product requirements will often drive the most challenging aspects of the manufacturing process which includes the processes and tools. Those requirements will differ depending on the product. Is it maximizing production rate, maintaining tight tolerances, hazardous materials or energy? To understand the challenges of the factory, start by understanding the product challenges that create the most risk for the business case.

Mega factory projects at the US$1B scale succeed when front-end definition, governance discipline, and contractor interface management are rock-solid.

Align scope and decision rights early, invest heavily in FEL, and run an integrated risk, interface, and communication cadence from day one, supported by a delivery governance model that is both fully integrated (engineering, procurement, permitting, contractors) and capable of making fast, authoritative decisions when uncertainty hits.
