A PM doesn’t “control” AI., a PM constrains AI through structured prompting.

In practice, a prompt is a governance artifact:

Scope definition

Constraints & boundaries

Assumptions

Acceptance criteria

Context variables

Risk & bias controls

This turns prompting into a form of Requirements Engineering + Decision Governance.

When these elements are explicit, AI output becomes:

Predictable

Auditable

Repeatable

Aligned with organisational standards

Without them, AI behaves like an uncontrolled process.

So the answer is: A PM controls AI the same way we control any complex system, through clarity, constraints, and governance, not intuition.

AI is a board term. The use of prompt with AI is mainly related to generative AI. In this case, you have to follow some of the well stablished prompt frameworks to get what you are looking for but mainly to do trust and consistency checking on the outcomes.

A PM doesn’t “control” AI the way we control a tool, but we do shape its output through good prompting. The prompt becomes our governance mechanism.
What has worked for me is treating prompts like requirements: be clear on scope, constraints, quality criteria, and assumptions. When the prompt defines context, boundaries, and the expected format, AI becomes much more predictable and aligned with project needs.
In that sense, PMs control AI by controlling the inputs, the same way we guide teams with well-framed problems, not vague requests.

AI doesn’t replace project management expertise—it amplifies it.
Think of your prompt as the project brief and AI as a team member responding to your instructions. The more precise, structured, and outcome-focused the direction, the more effective the output.

I’d be happy to explore this further with you if needed. While our community members have already provided excellent insight and direction, please feel free to reach out if you'd like additional clarification or real-world examples.

Can you all share some of the prompts you use frequently or a prompt which gave you good results & you are proud of it..

A PM controls AI by giving clear prompts, setting context and boundaries, and reviewing outputs to meet project goals. You can also try PMI Infinity, an amazing AI tool for project managers.
