I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area, and I'm trying to rejoin the workforce after raising my daughter. For several years, I was a low-level manager for a newspaper. Where do I start if I want to be a project management professional? Looking for training.
There are many online courses, but I learn best in a classroom setting.

Thank you for any advice, insights --

In my opinion, experience is the best teacher. Classroom or online will teach you the basics of project mgmt. However applying that learning in real life actually shows you the pit falls, improvement areas, etc. Therefore take training and work in the project mgmt area for some time to make your self most eligible for the post among your team members.

UC Berkeley Extension has has some classes on project management. Attend the PMI webinars and if you are a member of the SF Bay Area PMI chapter, you can attend the monthly meetings so you can network with the project management professionals in the area.

It is very important that you supplement your training with hands-on experience. You can gradually immerse yourself in project management by working with project managers or project coordinators as a project assistant initially. You can also reach out to temp agencies and specify with them your preference to work in a project management setting.

It can be expensive, but I would highly recommend a PMP bootcamp class if you are preparing for the certification. Sometimes, your employer will agree to pay for the course and the cost of sitting the exam. Also, becoming a PMI member allows you to receive discounts on the exam fee and can also be beneficial to help with networking and ongoing project management training.

Another important point, try to readh out pmi chapter in your region and work for them as a volunteer which will bring to you more experience and moreover you will be able to atteend their local events

If you need some local support or guidance, joining your local PMI chapter might be a good idea. My suggestions would be to;

-Join local professional groups and learn from their experiences.
-If you are looking into project management jobs, check with your peers to see the best local options.
-I strongly suggest to do some projects (can also be personal just to understand the basics) before attempting to certify.
-ProjectManagement.com has a tressure of articles and blogs you can browse through.
-If you prefer classroom setting you can try live webniars [and pretend to be in a class :-)] they are much cheaper than classrooms.

Wish you all the best!
