Hi Arlene,
Thanks for posting this question from PMO prospective, I feel Its the Choice made by organisation where PM to focus fully Technical Delivery to complete technical deliverables, hence PMO takes care of rest of process :
1. Schedule Tracking
2. Risk / Isssues Logs
3. Action items followup
4. Document Repository
5. Minutes.
6. Logistics
7. Budget Tracking.
Hope my answer helped, if not please let me know, your expectation in detail.
Thanks

Arlene,
I agree with Ganesh's argument. The PMO own's the process, templates. There still is a process with agile, and it's not free of deliverables. Also, depending on organizational size, it can provide a pool of schedulers, analysts, etc. to work on a project. Also consider tool management, as tools such as Rational are oftem employed. An interesting point. As a member of ASQ, American Society for Quality, we have a similar situation. The modern philosophy is that "Quality is Everyone's Business", so why do we need "Quality" professionals? Why do we need a Quality Mgmt Plan as part of our Proj Plan?
Some typical functions of the PMO (even in an agile world): Project Audits, Standards and Templates, Portfolio (Backlog) Mgmt, "Expert Judgment", and enterprise assets such as "historical information". Saving Changes...

Let's make it interesting:
What is the role, the purpose of a PMO?
Is there such thing as "The PMO"?
Why should a PMO not generate value within the context of an agile Methodology, Life Cycle or Organization?
Cheers

In my life I found the most important goal for a PMO to reduce the time management spends for escalations. Management is a key stakeholder and mostly funding the PMO, if they are satisfied, funding will continue.
So a PMO is at best trying to establish transparency by standardization, increase planning accuracy, even more with agile, and identify threats with risk management (audits). No surprises and unsolved problems, please.
It is easy at it is: remove your boss' workload and stress and your job is secured. Agile or whatever. Saving Changes...
