Over the years, I’ve seen PMOs shift from strict governance to more advisory and support-focused roles. Today, with teams using digital tools, AI assistants, and faster delivery models, the expectations on PMOs are changing again. In your organization, how is the PMO adapting to stay helpful without slowing teams down? And what support do teams expect now that they didn’t ask for a few years ago?

Great question, Pavan.
I’m noticing the same shift as well. PMOs seem to add the most value today when they work as enablers rather than gatekeepers. Lighter governance, practical data insights, and on-demand support are far more helpful than heavy, rigid controls.
Teams now look to PMOs for support with tool integration, real-time visibility, prioritization, and better decision-making—not just compliance. When PMOs focus on removing friction and helping teams move faster with confidence, they remain truly relevant. Golam Saving Changes...
This year, I don’t sit today in a formal PMO Director role, but one thing I’ve learned over the years is that disruption is nothing new for PMOs. What’s new is the speed. With digital tools, AI, and faster delivery models, PMOs stay relevant when they shift from control to enablement. Less focus on enforcing process, more focus on helping teams make better decisions, faster. The PMOs that add the most value today act as connectors, not gatekeepers. They use technology to reduce reporting effort, provide lightweight guidance, and bring clarity across priorities and dependencies. What teams expect now goes beyond governance. They want decision support, context, and help navigating constant change and tool overload. When PMOs focus on removing friction instead of adding layers, they don’t slow teams down, I believe we help them move forward with confidence.

PMOs stay relevant by shifting from control to enablement. Instead of enforcing rigid governance, they focus on providing digital fluency, coaching, and value delivery frameworks that help teams scale without friction. Teams now expect support in areas like data-driven decision making, AI tool integration, and cross-team alignment—things they didn’t ask for before but are critical to keep speed and autonomy without losing strategic coherence. In this scenario, the PMO stays relevant when it stops obsessing over process and starts helping people make better decisions. As teams become more digital and autonomous, piling on controls rarely adds value. What really helps is clarity, prioritization and portfolio-level visibility. When governance is lightweight and practical, teams move faster without losing alignment, and the PMO shifts from being seen as overhead to becoming the link between strategy and real execution. A PMO stays relevant by shifting from control to enablement. As teams become more digital and autonomous, heavy governance adds little value. What teams need now is clarity, prioritization, and decision support, not more approvals. Lightweight governance, portfolio visibility, and practical insights help teams move faster without losing alignment. When a PMO focuses on removing friction and connecting strategy to execution, it stops being perceived as overhead and becomes a trusted partner in delivery. Saving Changes...
