With async work and deep focus becoming the norm, is the classic daily sync the best use of time? What modern rituals (e.g., weekly async check-ins, focused "war rooms," AI-powered dashboards) have you successfully implemented to replace or augment them? Share your experience — let's debate the future of team cadence.

Daily stand-ups are not obsolete—though maybe I’m a bit old-fashioned and retro!

Whether in person or online!

I actually really appreciate asynchronous check-ins—especially for distributed or remote teams. They create space to reflect on the day ahead, what has been achieved, and any doubts, questions, or support needed.

Great discussion here. Thanks everyone for sharing your insights. It is really valuable to see the different approaches and how workflows are evolving across various organizations.
Using a "ways of working" approach with the team upfront and establishing the norms and cadence for our teams sometimes does away with what you would think of as a traditional daily "standup". Our resources are finite and strapped, so we often use a disciplined hybrid approach and adjust cadence at various times in our projects going from every other week standups to daily standups as we approach key deliverables. Asynch communication helps us get information real-time. This has helped us keep everyone engaged and keep them from burning out while ensuring blockers are identified quickly.

Even with async work becoming more common place and something that I enjoy, there are times where stand-ups are useful in my work to get answers quickly so that projects can continue moving. Daily standups provide opportunities for us to discuss roadblocks or problems in real-time that can potentially take hours or days to do over async communications.

We’ve experimented with:
  • Weekly async check-ins
  • Focused “war rooms” for critical milestones
  • AI-powered dashboards for real-time insights
