I was part of the group that investigate on that before it exists with this name and it becomes "famous" because the publication of Transformers Architecture in 2017. It creates a break, a disruption in AI world. But you can take it in this way: generative Ai is predictive text with steroids. That´s because the prompt format is the key. Today, generative AI not predict text only. And because it, because like in other things related to AI, the outputs are based on probabilities, you need to perform activities like consistency and trust checking and all related to Responsible AI.
