I am in the business of developing project management training programs for a consulting firm. The question that I get asked most often by my students is WHY? Why should I invest company resources and my precious time to support a project management effort? As a former project manager, in the business for sometime now, I have my standard answers. However, I would like to hear the opinions others in the business.

Why waste time? That is exactly what will happen to most projects that do not have a defined structure and a experienced manager driving the process. Project Management in itself is not an revolutionary discipline rather evolutionary. Before Project Management became accepted, projects would frequently sputter and die mainly because of unpredictability. Good project managers are often the most sructured and disciplined managers you will find. Projects succeed because of this. Companies use Project Management because they need predictable results.
